I was eager to get out to Steinke Basin this morning for a walk. I was dissuaded yesterday by the large splotches of dark green on the radar map, only to be disappointed when the rain never really materialized.
Today, the radar map was clear but when I got outside it was misting lightly. I don’t mind walking in a light rain – I find it very soothing.
The moisture glistened off cobwebs along the trail, and once I got into the woods, the clusters of jack-in-the-pulpit berries added a vibrant red to the forest floor.
I heard and saw a pileated woodpecker from a distance. I often encounter them both in town and out in nature. I love their medicine of listening to divine timing and going deep.
More bottle gentian in the meadowy areas. This is harder to spot because it’s sometimes hidden amongst other foliage. Its gentle energy makes it my favorite late summer wildflower.
The asters are also blooming. I’m sure there will be many more to come. (Hint for crossword fans. Fall bloomers = asters.)
I came out to Steinke this morning to lose my thoughts and find myself.
This work is real, and it matters.
