Our root chakra and grounding cord work together to keep us connected to Mother Earth. Through that bond, we can feel her solid, stable, secure, supportive energy. This aids us in being centered in ourselves, feeling safe, and having healthy boundaries.
But that’s only half of what a grounding cord does. Our grounding cords also serve as release valves for excess or unwanted energy. When we take on heavy or negative energy, our grounding cord helps drain that away. It also supports us in releasing excess emotion (such as anger or grief), overwhelming sensory input, or a buildup of kinetic energy.
Without an established grounding cord, the heavy energy doesn’t have an exit point. It continues to be held in the body and even accumulates as new energy and emotion come into the system. This is especially challenging for empaths who tend to hang onto energy anyway. Without a release valve, the heavy energy grows and grows, and we feel worse and worse.
I’ve also noticed a similar dynamic for empaths who have strong walls around themselves for protection and safety. The solid walls also tend to hold in the heavy energy and prevent it from leaving.
Learning to be grounded, working with our grounding cords, and releasing excess energy is part of our birthright in being born a human. Even if it doesn’t come naturally, it’s possible to grow these skills with practice and gain greater comfort in our physical body.
This work is real, and it matters.
