A divination walk can help us find clarity around an issue in our lives. When we pose a question while outdoors, nature brings signs and messages in response. Our higher self interprets these signs and speaks to us through our intuition.

While on a divination walk, everything we see, hear or encounter has meaning in light of our query. Even a whiff of an aroma, a glimpse of a color, or an animal darting across our path is somehow a message.

Begin by allowing your intuition to draw you to a place in nature for your divination walk. In your own heart-felt words, ask the spirits of that place to work with you. Ask them to serve as your oracles and bring the sights, sounds, smells, sensations and situations that will provide insight and clarity around your question.

Now pose your question. Be clear, but leave room for Spirit to work. Examples of questions:

“What do I need to know to heal my relationship with my sister?”
“How do I go about welcoming more balance into my life?”
“What does the ache in my left shoulder mean?”

“What foods will best support my optimal health?”

Then open up your sixth sense, your intuition. You might do this by stating your intention to open your intuition, by dialing your third eye open a little wider, or by dropping down into trance.

Then begin walking. Allow your intuition to draw you forward. Everything that happens on your nature walk from this point on is a piece of divination with a message. If you stumble over a tree root, what does that mean? If you see a piece of trash, what meaning does that have? If the path gets steep, what does that say about your question?

Pay particular attention to any birds, animals or insects that interact with you – they often hold special meaning as direct messengers of Spirit. Observe a bird or animal, then interpret the meaning in light of the question you’ve posed. An inchworm dangling in front of your face may be a message that you’re trying to do too much, to slow down and make progress on your goals inch by inch. A rabbit nibbling on greens along the side of the path may be a message to eat more vegetables.

While walking, stay in the present moment and hold your awareness on what’s going on around you. Use all your senses and enjoy being in nature. When your mind wanders, watch where it goes. The stray thoughts, worries or memories that creep in all have meaning.

When complete with your divination walk, give gratitude to Spirit for the messages you’ve been gifted. Some common ways to do this: leaving a pinch of tobacco or cornmeal, singing a song for the fairies or hugging a tree.

As you continue to sit with the information you’ve received, additional awareness will unfold. You might consider journaling, writing a story or a poem, or creating artwork about your experiences as a way of getting further insight. Bringing the energy of your walk back into the physical also helps honor the experience.
