Most homes have guardian spirits. Two trees in my yard – a towering basswood in the front and an equally majestic silver maple in the back – form a canopy over my house. I’ve been aware of their protection since moving in. These loving beings have watched over the home through its changes in owners. The people who lived here over the last century were aware of their presence on a spiritual level and honored them.

There is also a phalanx of angels surrounding my home. It’s vitally important for me to have strong protection around my living space so that it remains clear of heavy energy and wayward spirits who might be drawn because of the work I do.

My house has one more guardian spirit, and thereby hangs a tale.

I moved into my one and a half story bungalow in November 2005. Shortly after, three friends from Iowa stayed with me to attend a shamanic workshop.

One of the guests brought a housewarming gift – a mask representing the Green Man. When he presented it to me, I felt an immediate connection to the spirit depicted.

I also felt joy at being gifted one of Bill’s creations. He is no longer with us in physical form but his presence continues to touch those who knew and loved him. I fondly recall several trips to his house in the woods. He was an artist and a seeker of knowledge. It was a delight to walk along the trails in his woods and discover his creations hidden amongst the plants and trees. He was definitely of the fairy folk. I can easily picture him as a wee one sitting on a toadstool drinking a dram of ale.

Through his connection to all things of the earth, Bill had called the energy of the Green Man into the sculpture as he created it.

From that first weekend in my home, the Green Man resided in a place of pride near the front entryway. He helps to ensure only people and beings of light enter my home.

Several years later, someone gave me a round wall hanging of a Mayan calendar. I took down the Green Man and hung the new artwork in the same space.

A couple of months went by until one evening I heard a crash and went to see what had happened. The Mayan artwork had jumped off the wall, and as I watched, it slowly rolled at least 20 feet through my dining room and into my kitchen where it wedged itself perfectly into a two-inch space between my garbage can and the wall. Message received loud and clear!

The Green Man went back to his rightful place on the wall near the doorway. He will reside here as long as I live in this home. This experience helped me to fully recognize that he is one of the spirit beings who watch over my home.

With the loving protection of the guardian spirits, I feel safe and nurtured here. My home is a place of peace and sanctuary.

This work is real, and it matters.
