Walking is my main form of exercise. It lifts my mood, and I feel strong and powerful. The movement brings any scattered parts of me back home, making room for Insights and creative ideas to drop in.

I find comfort in being outdoors and interacting with the elements. When I walk, I feel the sun on my cheek and the breeze in my hair. I listen to the birds calling, the trees rubbing together on a windy day, or the gentle babbling of the river. I pause to admire the beauty of wildflowers along the way or to take in a beautiful view.

Walking in nature connects me more deeply to Mother Earth. As I make my way along the trail, my body naturally attunes to her solid, stable, supportive energy. The movement dislodges whatever heavy energy I’ve been carrying, leaving a lighter feeling in its wake.

This connection to Mother Earth comes about through our grounding cord. This cord, which looks like tree roots, extends down from the base of our tailbone and runs straight down to the core of Mother Earth. It easily and effortlessly moves through anything in its path.

Our grounding cord serves two purposes. It keeps us connected to the secure, safe, loving energy of Mother Earth, and it serves as a release valve for any excess or unwanted energy.

This explains why we feel better after a walk. The anger, pain, fear, grief, or pent up energy that was with us at the beginning of the walk gets released to Mother Earth through our grounding cord.

We can purposely work with our grounding cord to release heavy energy at any time, even if we’re not able to get out for a walk. To establish our grounding cord, we mindfully breathe into the belly and then exhale down the legs and out the feet to Mother Earth. One we feel the connection, we breathe and release any excess energy down the grounding cords back to Mother Earth for recycling. Doing even five minutes of breathing can make a big difference.

There is no need to be concerned about harming Mother Earth with our heavy energy. Our suffering, doubt, or despair does not harm her. The energetic field of Mother Earth is much larger than any one person – and even all the people living on the planet. She transforms the heaviness we release back into divine, universal life force energy.

This is part of humanity’s original agreement with Mother Earth. She holds us and loves us. Each of us has the divine right to be connected to her in this way. And in reciprocity, we have agreed to honor her. We can do our part by walking gently through the physical world reducing our carbon footprint, minimizing our trash, using renewable forms of energy, and advocating on her behalf.

This work is real, and it matters.
