Each of our chakras has a color associated with it, and we can use that color to revitalize that chakra and boost our energy.
This morning on my walk at the conservancy land near my house, a meadow trail drew me. After walking for a short while, I noticed that everywhere I looked, the color yellow captured my attention.
A profusion of wildflowers dotted the landscape in an array of yellow tones – from the pale yellow of the butter and eggs and the newly blossoming mullein, to the bright sunny yellow of the hawkweed and dandelion, to the deep golden yellow of the St. John’s wort and black-eyed susans. With each gaze, my eye alit upon a spot of yellow.
I had walked the same trail just a few days before and hadn’t noticed the yellow. That I noticed it so strongly today meant that it had a message for me. And because yellow is the color related to the third chakra, I interpreted it to mean that my third chakra wanted some attention.
So I paused on the trail, spun open my third chakra and began pulling in the color yellow, first with my intention, then with my hands and my breath. My chakra hungrily accepted and began pulsing with the energy. As I continued my walk, I continued to breathe in yellow each time I passed a wildflower. My third chakra felt empowered and enlivened. I felt refreshed and energized.

Here’s how to work with color to boost the energy of a chakra:
- Pay attention to the natural world. What colors do you notice in your environment? This technique is best practiced with color from a healthy, living being such as a plant or a tree – their chi (energy) is life-giving.
- Tune in with your intuition. Would your body or energy field find that color healing?
- Locate the related chakra:
Red – first chakra – the perineum (the area where you sit)
Orange – second chakra – lower belly (below the belly button)
Yellow – third chakra – upper belly (above the belly button)
Green – fourth chakra – heart (center of chest)
Sky blue – fifth chakra – throat
Indigo blue – sixth chakra – third eye (center of forehead)
Violet – seventh chakra – crown (top of head)
- Spin that chakra open. Take the fingers of one hand and make a spinning motion against the body to open the chakra. Use your intuition and your kinesthetic sense to feel where the chakra is and when it is open. Experiment with using a clockwise versus a counter-clockwise motion, as not everyone’s chakras spin in the same direction.
- Use your intention and your breath to pull the energy of the color in to the chakra. (If you are not able to find the color you are drawn to work with in nature, then imagine a ray of colored light coming from the sky, and pull it in from that source.) You can also use your hands to scoop up the energy and funnel it into your chakra.
- Observe your body and energy field when it drinks in the color. What happens?
- Spin your chakra closed when complete. Spin in the opposite direction you used to open it.
- Give thanks to the source of the color energy.
- Go on your way feeling revitalized and refreshed.
