The most basic form of divination with a card deck is thinking of a question, then picking one card to represent an answer. This works with any type of divination deck, including tarot cards, angel cards, and animals cards.

Three-card readings help us go deeper into our intuition and yield more information. To do a three-card spread, shuffle the deck while thinking of your question and pick the top three cards. Or you might fan out the cards (upside down) and pick the three cards you are intuitively drawn to. Then arrange the cards in front of you from left to right in the order selected.

A basic three-card spread often represents past-present-future with the card on the left containing information about the past, the middle card containing information about the present, and the card on the right containing information about the future.

Many three-card readings are possible. Here are two other suggestions:

Left – underlying influences affecting the situation
Center – the center of the situation
Right – the outcome of the situation

                                                OR

Left – a message from our body
Center – a message from our heart
Right – a message from our soul

But we’re not limited to the card readings suggested in the booklets that come with the decks. We can devise our own three-card readings to fit our situation. For instance, if we desire to connect with our guides, we could pose a question, then choose three cards. The left card might represent a message from a power animal, the middle card a message from an angel and the right a message from a divine compassionate being.

To develop your own three-card spread, determine what three pieces of information would be most helpful to receive and how they will correspond to the card positions of left, middle, and right. Then draw three cards and begin your interpretation, opening to the wisdom of your higher self.
