While out in nature, have you ever felt someone watching you? You even turned and looked to see if a hiker was coming up the trail behind you, but no one was there.

Quite likely, someone was there, but it might not have been a person.

An animal or a bird may have been hiding nearby, observing you to see if they needed to be concerned for their safety. Or a nature spirit may have been watching. Many kinds of beings live in nature – including fairies, elementals, tree spirits, and land guardians.

Your instincts may have perceived the scrutiny being given you by one of these beings. It can be unsettling, particularly at first when we’re not aware where it’s coming from. Sometimes just the sense of being observed kicks in a primal fear response. But if we get quiet and go beneath the fear, we may discover a curious being or a nature spirit wanting to connect and share their wisdom.

Pause for a moment and assess. Access your intuition and ask your inner guidance if you have a reason to be afraid. Is the source of your unease human, animal or spirit? When you’re satisfied that you are not in danger, breathe and feel beneath the fear. You might even pivot slowly. A tug in your gut while facing a certain way may indicate whatever is watching you is in that direction. You might choose to explore and see where you are led. You may encounter an animal with a message or a fairy glen that holds healing for you.

If it feels right, allow yourself to interact with what you discover during your scan. Unexpected and delightful opportunities to cleanse and replenish our energy arise from being in the moment in nature. We may be drawn to stop along a stream and bathe our feet in the gently flowing water, or we may have a strong urge to take a restorative nap with our back against a tree. When we listen and interact with nature, miracles can happen. We are often guided to these openings by the very beings we felt watching us.
