At times, we put considerable time and energy into ignoring the needs of our body. Bring your awareness to these scenarios. How often do you:

·      feel thirsty – but continue working without pausing to take a drink of water?

·      feel sleepy – but force yourself to do one more thing before going to bed?

·      need to use the bathroom – but hold it because the timing isn’t convenient?

·      notice an urge to go for a walk in nature – but start instead on the next item from your to-do list?

·      crave a certain healthy food – but eat the same old thing because you ran out of time to shop for groceries?

·      feel cold – but “tough it out” without putting on warmer clothing?

Modern society is often at odds with caring for our body in these very basic ways. Being on call 24/7, spending long hours on a computer, and working a scheduled shift instead of following our natural body rhythms all take their toll. We get busy and rushed, and the needs of our body suffer.

When we listen to our body and meet its basic needs without delay or excuse, a shift happens in our root chakra, the energy center which governs matters of overall physical health. We become more comfortable and at ease in our body. We become more grounded and connected to Mother Earth, and we see the impact our lifestyle has on our body. We begin meeting other physical needs such as eating more healthy and exercising regularly – all of which lead to a boost of energy and healing in our root chakra. Our body rejoices in the newfound care and attention as we open to our physical well-being.

What small step can you take today to meet your body’s basic needs?
